Roundnet or Spikeball? Which one is it?

Roundnet is the sport. Spikeball is a brand. Spikeball Inc. is the American company that took the game to a mass audience from 2008 onward and sells the best known equipment for it. It worked so well that the brand name arrived in most countries long before the name of the sport did.

You already know this pattern from other sports. Frisbee is a brand, the sport is ultimate. Jacuzzi is a brand, the thing is a hot tub. Nobody is wrong for saying Spikeball, and no competitive player will correct you at the park.

"So why bother with the other word at all, Jakub?" Because once you look for a club, a tournament or a national team, the sport is filed under roundnet. The world championship is the Roundnet World Championship. The federations are the International Roundnet Federation, the European Roundnet Association, the Asian Roundnet Federation. Your national body will be called something like Roundnet Germany. Search for Spikeball and you find a shop. Search for roundnet and you find the sport.

There is a second reason, and it is more practical: Spikeball is no longer the only manufacturer. Bamball, Premier Spike, Rumble Roundnet and Rashball build sets that players compete on. A sport that is named after one of its suppliers has a problem the day it wants more than one.
